Out here on Kamaraj Road in Mahalingapuram, things stay pretty busy with all the coir coming in. We’ve got the smell of coconut fiber everywhere, which you get used to after about five minutes on the job. Our place at number 27 is where we take the raw stuff and turn it into something people can actually use. It’s messy work sometimes, and your clothes end up dusty by the end of the shift, but there’s a certain satisfaction in seeing the finished mats or bundles ready to go. The warehouse stays pretty full, and we’re always shuffling things around to make room for the next delivery. We aren’t a massive operation with a board of directors; it’s more about a group of us who know the trade and keep the machines running. Sometimes the monsoon makes things a bit damp and slow, but we manage to keep the schedules mostly on track. Most of the people working here have been in Mahalingapuram their whole lives. We talk to the drivers, handle the loading, and make sure the accounts are mostly straight. It’s a straightforward life. We don't put on any acts. We just work with coir and try to stay out of the heat when we can. If you walk past, you'll see us busy with the loading or maybe just sitting on a crate during a short lunch break.
