Our group is based in Paharpur village, right at Lakshmi Kumari’s place. It’s part of the Fatehpur post office area in Gaya, Bihar. We go by Maharishi Mehi Traders Agro Farmer Producer Company Limited. It’s a long name for a group of farmers and traders just trying to get our crops to the right people. Most of us have been working these fields for years before we decided to pool our resources together. Being in Gaya, we deal with the heat and the seasons as they come. It’s not always easy getting things moved around, especially when the roads are rough after the rain, but we do our best. We use the space at Lakshmi’s house to meet up and talk about what’s growing and what the prices are looking like. It’s a very local operation. We don't have glossy brochures. Usually, it’s just us talking over tea about seeds or how the harvest is looking this month. People in Paharpur know where we are. We focus on the agro side of things because that is what we know. Trading is just part of the life here in the village. It’s practical work. We are just a bunch of neighbors working together to make sure our produce finds a market without too much trouble. It keeps us busy from morning until the sun goes down and there is always something to do.
