Ambey Marble & Tiles

Ambey Marble & Tiles is found in Golaghat, right near the Ram Janki Mandir. Being so close to the temple means we are in a very recognizable spot. Our yard is usually filled with large slabs of marble and granite, along with boxes of various tiles. It’s a heavy, physical business. We spend the day moving these stones with the help of a few laborers. The ground is often covered in a fine layer of stone dust, and when it rains on our tin roof, the sound is quite loud. We have samples laid out so customers can see the natural veins in the stone. It’s not a polished environment by any means. We have a small corner with a table and a couple of plastic chairs where we talk to people about their requirements. The smell of incense from the temple often drifts over into our yard, especially in the mornings and evenings. We don't have any fancy catalogs or a big marketing budget. We just show what we have in stock. People come to us when they are building a new house or fixing up an old one. We try to be helpful and give them a fair idea of what they are buying. It’s a straightforward trade. We open early, do the heavy lifting, and close up when the sun goes down. It’s a decent way to make a living in Golaghat.
