If you find yourself in Patiala near the Gurudwara Dukhniwaran Sahib, you might see Shop Number 100 in the Guru Teg Bahadur Market. That’s where we run Amarpalis Food & Refreshment. It’s not a big restaurant with printed menus and waiters in uniforms. It’s more of a local spot where people stop for a quick bite or a glass of tea. We’ve been here for quite some time now. The market is always lively, especially with the devotees coming and going from the Gurudwara all day. We serve simple things like snacks, tea, and some local refreshments. There are only a few tables and most people just stand and eat while they talk. My brother and I handle the cooking and the cleaning ourselves. It gets very busy in the mornings and evenings when the market is full. We don't have a chef from a big hotel; we just cook things the way we’ve always done at home. Sometimes we run out of a certain snack by the afternoon if the crowd is bigger than usual. We don’t use any fancy advertising or signs. People just see the shop and come in because they are hungry or thirsty. The kitchen is small and it gets quite hot in there, but we like the work. It’s good to see the same faces every day. We aren’t trying to be a five-star place. We just want to give people some decent food and a place to rest.
