St Thomas Hospital

Down here in Malakkara, St Thomas Hospital is a familiar sight for everyone in the Pathanamthitta district. We are tucked away in Chengannur and it’s a bit different from the hospitals in the bigger cities. Life moves a little slower here but the hospital stays just as busy. We see a lot of people from the nearby villages. Most of the staff grew up around here, so we often know the patients by their first names or at least know which family they belong to. The building is surrounded by some greenery which is nice when you need a break. We handle a bit of everything, from minor injuries to people staying overnight for more care. The equipment we have is what we need for the usual cases. It’s not a place with glass walls and fancy lobbies. It’s a place where the floors are mopped with strong disinfectant every hour. We deal with power cuts sometimes, but we have backups to keep the lights on. The nurses spend a lot of time talking to patients, not just checking their vitals. It’s a very local atmosphere. We don't put on any acts. If the wait is long, we tell you it’s long. We just do the work. The drive to get here is pretty straightforward if you know the Malakkara area. It’s just a part of the landscape here, doing what it’s supposed to do for the community.
