In the town of Chanasma, Patan, our school stands as a place for the older kids to finish their studies. Being a higher secondary school means we deal with teenagers who are mostly worried about their board exams and what they’ll do after they leave. The building is a standard concrete structure with several floors. We don't have elevators, so everyone gets their exercise going up and down the stairs. The classrooms are filled with the sound of fans humming and pens scratching on paper. Chanasma is a quiet enough town, and we are tucked away where it’s decent for studying. Our staff is a mix of people who have been here for twenty years and some younger ones just starting out. We have a small laboratory for science stuff, though it’s pretty basic with old glass tubes and jars. The courtyard is where everything happens, from the morning assembly to the quick breaks between classes. It gets dusty during the dry season, so we spend a lot of time sweeping. Parents often drop by to check on their kids' progress, sitting in the office for a quick chat. It’s just a regular cycle of terms and holidays. We don't have big budgets for extras, so we make do with what we have on hand. It feels like a second home to most of us who spend all day here. We don't make a big fuss about things, we just keep the doors open.
