We are located in Village Dadka, which is under the Hodal Taluka. It’s a quiet enough place until the tractors start moving the earth. Shri Bankey Bihari Bricks Udyog isn't a huge operation, just a local brick field where we do things the way they’ve always been done by our fathers. The address is simple, right at the post in Dadka. We spend a lot of time checking the weather reports because rain is the enemy of a brick maker. If the raw bricks get wet before they are fired, all that work is gone into the mud. So, we are always rushing to cover them up if the clouds look dark over the fields. It’s a lot of physical labor, digging and shaping. We don't have many fancy gadgets here. Most of the work is done by hand and with simple tools. People from the surrounding villages know us. They come by when they are adding a room to their house or fixing a wall. We just try to stay honest with everyone about how many bricks we have ready to go. Sometimes we run out if there’s a big project nearby. The dust is everywhere, and the heat from the chimney is constant during the firing season. It’s just how life is in the brick business in Hodal. We keep our heads down and work through the season until the monsoon hits and we have to pause for a while.
