Motvani Kirana Stroe

We have been running the Motvani Kirana Stroe on Ramdev Road for years, and not much has changed in that time. The shop is full of the smell of spices and raw sugar. We have big open bags of rice and dal sitting on the floor, and we use old metal scoops to fill up packets for the customers. It is a lot of repetitive work, but it is what we know. The walls are lined with wooden shelves that have started to sag a bit under the weight of all the canned goods and jars. We don't have a fancy cooling system, so in the summer, the chocolate bars sometimes get a bit soft. We just try to keep things moving. We know which families in the neighborhood prefer which brand of cooking oil. It is a busy road, so there is always a layer of fine dust on the front step that we have to sweep away every morning. We don't use a barcode scanner or anything high-tech; we just know the prices by heart or look them up in a worn-out notebook we keep by the cash box. Sometimes the delivery truck is late and we have to tell people to come back tomorrow for their flour. It is just a regular life of service, making sure the people around Ramdev Road have what they need for their daily meals without any fuss or trouble.
