Working at Jai Ice Depoo is a lot of heavy lifting. We are right by the Old Bus Stand, which is a busy place to be most of the time. Every morning the big blocks of ice come in and we have to move them quickly before they start sweating too much in the heat. It is a wet job and my boots are almost always damp by the end of the shift. We supply a lot of the local vendors around the bus stand who need to keep their drinks cold. It is a simple business, really. We just sit here in the shade of the building when it gets too hot, waiting for the next truck or customer to pull up. The Old Bus Stand is always full of people shouting and buses reversing, so it is never quiet. Sometimes the saw we use to cut the ice gets stuck, and we have to fix it right there on the spot. It is just me and a couple of others handling the heavy stuff. We don't have any fancy signs or big advertisements, just the name Jai Ice Depoo painted on the wall. People know where we are if they need to cool things down. It is hard on the back, but it is steady work and it keeps us busy during the long summer months. We don't really think about much else, just getting the ice out before it melts into nothing.
