Jai Matadi Marble & Granite

If you walk down Mahim Road in Khanpada, you will see our yard right near the Twinkal Star School. You can usually hear the sound of the school bells or the kids shouting during their break while we are trying to move heavy granite pieces. My father started this under the name Jai Matadi Marble & Granite, and I have been helping out since I was a teenager. It is not a glamorous job. The slabs are heavy and they can be quite dangerous if you are not careful with your feet. We have slabs leaning against the walls in every corner. Some of them have been there for months because nobody wants that specific shade of grey this year. Most of our days are spent talking to local builders or families who are just trying to fix up a small flat. We don't use any big machines here, just a lot of manual labor and some basic cutters. The tea stall next door is where I spend most of my time when it is quiet. Sometimes the dust from the Mahim Road traffic gets so thick we have to spray water on everything just to see the color of the stones clearly. It’s just a simple yard where we work hard and hope the rain doesn't soak our account books. We know most of the people who walk past every day and it feels like a real community even with all the noise.
