Over here in Agasingh, the air is usually a bit humid because we are in Tiswadi. Our office is near the police station, so it stays fairly safe and quiet most of the time. I’m Rahul, and I spend most of my hours looking at site plans or talking on the phone with suppliers. Being a contractor in a village means you have to know everyone. You can’t just sit in an office all day. I’m often out on the roads or at a building site making sure the levels are correct. The monsoon season is the hardest part of the year. Everything turns to mud and we have to cover the equipment with big blue tarps. It’s a lot of waiting around for the clouds to break. When the weather is good, we are working from sunrise to sunset. My office is pretty basic. I have a big wooden table and a few chairs for when people come to talk about their plans. We don’t do anything flashy. It’s just about building things that will last and making sure the measurements are right. Sometimes we run out of gravel and have to wait for the truck to come from across the district. Those are the days when I catch up on all the notes and receipts that pile up on my desk. It’s a steady life, even if it gets a bit stressful when deadlines are close.
