Down here in Naihati, things move at their own pace. Devwanti Garments Pvt. Ltd. is basically a workshop where we spend most of our waking hours. If you walk inside, the first thing you will notice is the sound of the sewing machines. It is a constant hum that you eventually stop hearing after you have worked here for a few months. There are piles of fabric everywhere you look, mostly cottons and synthetics in different colors. We do not have a fancy showroom or a reception desk. It is just a place of work. The floor is usually covered in little threads and scraps of cloth by the end of the shift. Most of our workers live nearby in Naihati, so we all know each other’s families and what is going on in the town. It gets really hot in the summer, so we have a bunch of big industrial fans blowing all the time to keep the air moving. Sometimes we have to rush to finish an order before the weekend, and those days are pretty chaotic. We eat lunch together on the back benches. It is a simple life. We do not do much advertising; people mostly find us through word of mouth or by seeing the trucks leaving with boxes. We have been making clothes here for many years now. It is what we know how to do. The building is old, and the stairs are a bit narrow, but it serves its purpose for us. We just focus on getting the stitching right and making sure the boxes are packed tight before they go out.
