Working at Dharam Palace in Sector 18 is a bit different because of the late hours. We don't even open the doors until most people are finishing their day jobs. I spend the early evening checking the bottle stock and making sure the glasses are all polished and put away. We have these heavy speakers that sometimes need their wires wiggled to work right. The lighting is kept low, so I have to use a small flashlight to find things in the storage room. It’s a lot of crates to move around and it's dusty back there. Once people start coming in, the whole vibe changes. It gets crowded and the air gets thick. We have to keep an eye on the door and the tables at the same time. Sometimes someone spills a drink on the floor and we have to rush over with a mop before someone steps in it. The music is loud enough that we have to shout to hear what people are saying. My throat is usually dry by midnight from all the talking. We have a small staff and we’ve all been here a while. We know which tables are the best and which ones have a slight wobble. After we close, we turn the big overhead lights on and it looks like a completely different place. We clean up the mess, lock the heavy doors, and head out.
