The rice mill in Balkonda Mandal is a loud place to spend your day. Sri Venkateshwara Rice Mill has been operating out of this 3/10E/1-5 address for a long time now. During the harvest season, the noise is constant, and there’s a fine dust of rice husk that settles on everything. You get used to it after a while, though. We work with the local farmers who bring their paddy in on tractor-trailers, lining up along the road. It’s a lot of physical work, moving bags and keeping the machinery running. Sometimes the machines break down at the worst possible time, and we have to spend half the night fixing them with whatever tools we have on hand. It’s not a clean job, and by the end of the shift, we’re all covered in gray dust. We have a small crew of workers who have been with us for years, and we all know the routine by heart. We don’t do much advertising because everyone in the mandal knows where we are and what we do. The rhythm of the mill follows the seasons. When it’s busy, we barely have time to eat, and when it’s slow, we spend our time cleaning and prepping for the next cycle. It’s a hard way to earn a living, but there’s a certain satisfaction in seeing the clean grain come out the other side.
