85/2 Katra Ishwar Bhawan Khari Baoli is where you can find us most days. If you’ve ever walked through Khari Baoli, you know the smell of spices and herbs is everywhere. Our place, S. S. Herbals, is tucked inside Katra Ishwar Bhawan, which is one of those old buildings that’s seen a lot of history over the decades. We spend most of our mornings sorting through different bags of dried plants and roots that come in from all over the country. It’s a messy job sometimes, and there’s always dust in the air, but it’s what we do. It isn't a big corporation; it’s just a few of us making sure the stuff looks okay before we send it out to the shops or people who use them for traditional mixtures. Dealing with herbs is tricky because the seasons change everything. One month the leaves look good, and the next, they’re harder to find. We’ve been in this specific spot for a good amount of time, and we’ve seen the market change quite a bit. The lanes are narrow, so getting big shipments in and out is always a bit of a headache, but that’s just life in Old Delhi. We don’t have a fancy showroom. It’s mostly just shelves full of jars and sacks piled up. We keep things simple and honest, just selling what we have and making sure the weight is right. It’s a long day, starting early, but the work is steady.
