Gujarat Spice Mills

Gujarat Spice Mills is set up in Sector-19 of the MIDC Industrial Area in Vashi. Being so close to the Vashi Railway Station means we hear the trains coming and going all day long. It is a very industrial part of town, with lots of warehouses and other mills nearby. Our space is filled with the sound of grinding and the heavy smell of peppers and turmeric. It is a lot of noise and a lot of dust, but that is just the nature of the spice business. We spend our hours watching the machinery and making sure the bags are filled correctly. The floor is usually covered in a fine layer of spice dust, no matter how much we sweep it. We work in shifts to keep up with the demand, and the lunch break is usually the only time it gets quiet in here. We eat our tiffins together in a small corner away from the machines. Outside, the streets are crowded with workers and delivery vehicles trying to navigate the MIDC lanes. We do not have a fancy showroom or a reception desk. People who need to find us just walk into the main bay where the work is happening. It is a straightforward, busy life here in Sector-19. We have been in this spot for years, and we have seen Vashi change a lot around us, but the mill keeps on running just the same as it always has.
