Down here on Vanerroad in Nashik Road, the days usually get quite hot. Our shop is located in Hanodremala Yogeshwar Nagar and it’s a small space packed with all sorts of things. We spend most of our time moving heavy sacks of rice and lentils around to make room for new stuff that arrives on the trucks. The fans hum all day but they don't do much against the heat of the afternoon. It’s a busy area and you can always hear the sound of motorcycles and rickshaws passing by outside. We don’t really have a big team or anything, just us making sure the shelves don’t look too empty. Often, we are busy dusting the plastic jars because the road outside brings in a lot of dirt. People from around the neighborhood stop in for bits and pieces like soap or cooking oil. We know most of them by face, though we don't always know their names. The walls are a bit faded and we have some old calendars hanging up that we never bothered to take down. It stays fairly crowded inside because we try to keep a bit of everything, so there isn't much space to walk around. By the time evening rolls around, we’re usually tired from standing. We count the registers, lock the doors, and head home just like everyone else around here. It is just a normal kirana shop doing the same thing every day.
