K Mohan Reddy Flour & Chilly Mill has been a part of Shivaji Nagar for a long time. Our address is H. No. 11-125/1 in Nakrekal and everyone knows the sound of our machines. When we are grinding the dried red chilies, the air gets very spicy and it makes everyone in the shop sneeze, including the customers. We also grind grains into flour for the local families. People bring their big sacks of rice or wheat on the back of their cycles and wait around while the machine does its work. The floor is always a bit white from the flour dust and the walls have that warm smell of toasted grain. My shirt is usually covered in dust by noon but that is just part of the job. We are in the Nalgonda district and the summers here are very dry which makes the chili grinding even more intense. The motor on the old mill sometimes makes a loud clanking noise and I have to fix it with a wrench I keep behind the counter. It is not a quiet place but it is where people meet and talk about the village news while they wait for their bags to be filled. We keep the scales balanced carefully because nobody wants to get less than what they brought in. It is honest work and it keeps us connected to all the families around here in Nakrekal.
