Agrawal Rice Mill

Agrawal Rice Mill is situated in Village Peerumadara, which is part of the Ramnagar Taluka in Nainital district. We are at the post office area of Peerumadara, so we are easy to find. The surroundings are nice, with more trees and open space than you might find in the big city mills. However, the work is just as hard. We have a lot of grain to move, and the machines do not take breaks. We spend a lot of our time checking the quality of the paddy that comes in from the local fields. If it’s too damp, we have to deal with that. If there are too many stones, we have to adjust. It is a constant back-and-forth with the equipment. We keep a small ledger on a wooden desk to track everything. The workers here are like family; we have seen each other’s kids grow up. We don't use any corporate talk here. If something is broken, we say it’s broken and we fix it with a wrench. The air smells like the earth and the toasted scent of the hulls. In the winter, it gets quite cold, and we huddle around small fires during our breaks. It is a simple, honest way to spend the day. We aren't trying to be the biggest mill around, just one that stays busy and keeps the machinery running smooth for another season.
