Shashi General Stores

You can find Shashi General Stores over in Vinoba Bhawe Nagar. It is one of those shops where we try to fit as much as possible into a small space. We have bags of flour on the floor and ribbons or small toys hanging from the ceiling hooks. It’s a bit of a squeeze when more than two people are inside at once. Most of our customers live right here in the colony, so they just walk over in their slippers to buy eggs or a loaf of bread. The light in the back of the shop flickers a little, but I haven't gotten around to fixing the wiring yet. My wife helps me keep track of what is running low. We usually open up quite early because people need stuff before they go to work. The street outside can get quite noisy with the kids playing, but inside it’s just the sound of the radio. We don’t really do any big advertising; people just know we are here. Sometimes I forget where I put the smaller items like safety pins or matchboxes, but I eventually find them behind the bigger boxes. It’s a messy place, but we know where everything is, more or less. We just keep the doors open and wait for whoever needs a quick refill on their kitchen supplies. It keeps us busy enough throughout the week, and we enjoy being part of the local community life.
