Sangita Saree Center

Sangita Saree Center is over in Geeta Nagar, specifically in the Zingabai Takli part of Nagpur. It’s a bit of a walk from the main road but people in the colony know where we are. Nagpur gets incredibly hot during the summer months, so the shop can feel like an oven even with the big ceiling fan going full speed. I usually keep a jug of cold water by my side all day. The shop is filled with sarees of all sorts of colors, mostly stacked in the steel cupboards against the wall. We don’t really have a big sign out front, just the name Sangita Saree Center painted on the wall. My family has lived in Geeta Nagar for a long time, so most of the people who come in are neighbors or friends of friends. We aren't trying to be some big showroom. It’s just a small space where we sell what we have. Sometimes the kids from the street play right outside the door and it gets a bit noisy. I spend a lot of time folding and refolding the fabric because people like to see everything before they decide. It takes a lot of patience to run a saree shop. By the time evening rolls around, I’m usually quite tired, but it’s a good kind of busy. Zingabai Takli is a quiet enough place most days, except for the occasional wedding procession passing by with loud music.
