If you are looking for Ashok & Co., we are at Shop No. 11 in the Onion Potato Market. This is part of the P. J. Nehru Market Yard in Kalamna. It is a very loud and busy place, especially in the early hours of the morning when the sun is just coming up. Everything revolves around the heavy trucks coming in with huge sacks of vegetables from the farms. Our shop isn't very big but it’s right in the middle of all the action and shouting. We spend our time weighing things on the scale, talking to the different drivers, and keeping track of the prices for the day. There is always a lot of dust flying around and the strong smell of onions in the air. We sit on small wooden stools and drink tea from the local stall while we wait for the next load to arrive. Sometimes the market floor gets so crowded with bags that you can barely walk between the piles. We’ve known the other shop owners in Kalamna for many years and we all try to help each other out when someone needs a hand. Our records are mostly kept in old hand-written ledgers because that’s what we are comfortable with using. It is definitely not a glamorous job and the hours are quite strange. But Ashok & Co. has its place here. We just focus on getting the produce moved quickly.
