Maa Laxmi Saree House

Maa Laxmi Saree House is located on Mahendra Dutta Lane, right in the Laxmitala Para area of Santipur in Nadia. If you know Santipur, you know it’s a place where people really care about their weaving and fabric. Our shop is just a regular house that we’ve used for the business for a long time. We have stacks of sarees everywhere, mostly on wooden shelves that reach up to the ceiling. It can get a bit dusty with all the cotton and silk around, but we try to keep it tidy for the customers. People from the neighborhood come in all the time, especially when there is a wedding or a festival coming up. We don't really do much advertising; people just know we are here on the lane. Sometimes we sit on the floor to show the sarees because it’s easier to spread the fabric out that way. The lighting isn't great, so we often take the cloth to the doorway to show the real color in the sunlight. Nadia can get very hot in the summer, so we have a couple of old fans that make a lot of noise but keep the air moving. It’s a family-run kind of thing, so there’s usually someone's kid running around or a neighbor stopping by just to chat for a bit. We just keep doing what we do, buying and selling sarees and making sure the local weavers have an outlet for their work.
