Shakti Rice Mill

Shakti Rice Mill is located right behind the station in Sonthi. You can usually hear the machines humming from a distance. We spend our days processing the grain that comes in from the surrounding farms. It’s a loud environment, and there’s always a fine layer of dust on everything, but that’s the nature of a mill. We’ve been at this for quite some time now. The location near the station is handy for transport, though it can get pretty congested when the trains are moving through and the trucks are trying to back in. We don’t have any fancy signs or a big lobby. It’s a working mill where the floors are hard and the work is repetitive. We watch the seasons change based on what’s being brought in. Sometimes the power goes out, and everything stops, which gives us a chance to have some tea and wait for the grid to come back up. We don’t spend much time worrying about the office side of things. Most of our effort goes into keeping the rollers and sorters running right so the rice comes out clean and ready for the market. It’s a tough job sometimes, especially in the humidity, but it’s what keeps the community fed and the local economy moving. We’re just regular folks doing a job that needs doing, keeping the machines greased and the bags filled every day, year after year.
