Ram Nursery

The nursery is out on Roorkee Road in Bamanheri. It’s mostly just us and the plants out here. My hands are usually covered in dirt by the time the sun is fully up. We don't have any fancy buildings or air-conditioned offices. It’s just a wide stretch of land where we try to keep things green. The road can be quite noisy with the trucks passing through Bamanheri, but you get used to that after a few months. We spend the day watering, weeding, and moving pots around to make sure everything gets the right amount of light. Sometimes the wind picks up and we have to secure the plastic sheets over the younger saplings. It’s a lot of physical labor. People driving by often slow down to look at what we have sitting near the edge of the road. We don't do much talking; we just show them the plants. We have a small wooden table where we keep our logbooks and a few tools. It’s a simple way to make a living. The weather is our biggest boss. If it’s too dry, we are out there with the hoses for hours. If it’s raining, we’re checking for leaks in the shed. We’ve been at this spot for years. Ram Nursery is just a local place where we put in our time and hope the season is good. It’s steady, honest work that keeps us busy from morning until evening.
