Steps Dance Academy is inside Akal Society in Sahar, Andheri East. We operate out of Flat No 8 in Wing C 2. It’s basically a home that we’ve turned into a small dance space. We moved the sofas and the dining table into the back room to clear out the main hall. It’s a bit tight when we have more than six or seven people, but we make it work by staggering our movements. The neighbors are generally okay with the noise as long as we stop by dinner time. We have a balcony where we keep some extra chairs and the sound system wires. It’s a very informal environment. I usually wear my regular clothes until the students arrive. We have a small mirror we bought from a shop that was closing down. It’s leaning against the wall because we didn't want to drill too many holes in the society’s walls. Living and working in the same area means I don't have a commute, which is the best part. Sahar is always noisy with the traffic from the airport, so the music doesn't really stand out that much anyway. We have a small fridge where we keep cold water for the dancers. Sometimes my mom makes snacks for the younger kids. It feels more like a family gathering than a school most of the time. We try to keep things relaxed for everyone who walks through the door.
