If you go to Colaba and find D H K Marg, look for number 5. That’s where Shree Parmeshwar Electronics is located. It’s an old building, like most of them in this part of town. The ceiling is high, and the walls are thick, which helps a bit with the heat. We have wires and components sitting on almost every flat surface. Sometimes it looks like a mess to an outsider, but we know exactly where every single fuse and circuit board is hiding. People come in with all sorts of broken gadgets, hoping we can fix what the bigger shops won’t touch. We spend hours under the magnifying lamp, soldering things and testing connections. It’s steady work. The shop has a heavy metal shutter that we pull down every night. It makes a loud noise that the neighbors are probably tired of hearing by now. We’ve got a small radio that stays tuned to the local station all day long. It provides a bit of background noise while we work. The front window is a bit dusty because of the road work outside, but you can still see the displays inside. We don’t have a big marketing plan or anything. Most people just find us because their father or their uncle told them we were here. We just take it one repair at a time and try to keep the lights on. It’s a good way to spend the day.
