Samaa Agro and Livestock is situated on the 10th floor of Al Ameer Apartment in Mumbai. It might seem a bit strange to have an agro and livestock business in a big apartment building in the city, but this is where we handle all the coordination and the paperwork. We work with farms and livestock owners across Maharashtra, helping them move their products to the markets here in Mumbai. The office at 1004 is usually a bit busy with people coming in and out, or the phones ringing constantly. It’s a lot of talking to transporters and making sure the livestock is moved safely and the crops arrive fresh. We started this because we saw a gap between the rural farmers and the big city buyers. It’s not always easy bridging that gap. Sometimes shipments are delayed because of traffic or rain, and we have to stay late to sort it out. We don’t have a big corporate culture here. We’re just a small team trying to get things done efficiently. We know the farmers personally and we know the traders at the market. It’s about building those relationships over time. The view from the 10th floor is nice, but we spend most of our time looking at spreadsheets and schedules. It’s a tough business but it’s interesting to see how the food gets from the field to the city tables.
