Our office is in Room 277, over in the Collectors Colony part of Chembur East. It is right there in Shiv Shakti Nagar along R C Marg. It is not a big corporate headquarters or anything like that, just a functional space where we handle the calls. When the phone rings, someone is always there to pick up, whether it is middle of the afternoon or late at night. The drivers know these Mumbai roads pretty well, which helps when traffic gets bad around the colony. We keep the keys on a board and there is always a thermos of tea somewhere in the room. The ambulances are parked nearby, and we spend a fair amount of time checking the fuel and making sure the stretchers are clean and ready for the next trip. It can be a bit loud outside with the street noise, but we are used to it by now. People from the neighborhood often drop by if they have questions about how to book a ride for a hospital visit. We just write everything down in a big ledger and keep track of who is out on a call. It is steady work and involves a lot of waiting followed by very busy moments. We try to keep the paperwork simple so we can move fast when we need to. It is a small room but it works for what we do every day here in Chembur.
