Barot Exports is on the first floor of a building called Survoday, at Plot 26 on Sarojini Road. This is in Vile Parle West, a part of the city that's always crowded but has a nice feel to it. Our office is at number 5. You have to walk up a flight of stairs to get to us. It’s not a big corporate headquarters, just a few rooms where we manage our export orders. We have some old wooden desks and a lot of filing cabinets that are probably too full. The windows look out onto the street, so we see the local life passing by while we work. It’s a bit of a lived-in space, with some mismatched chairs and a printer that occasionally makes a loud grinding noise. We spend most of our hours on the computer or talking to suppliers. Exporting goods involves a lot of waiting and then a lot of rushing, so our pace changes throughout the day. We don't have a receptionist; usually, whoever is closest to the door just answers it. We keep things very informal here. We know our regular couriers and the people in the neighboring offices. Sometimes we have samples of the products we export sitting on the shelves, just to keep track of what’s going out. It’s a basic setup, but it works for us. We just focus on getting the daily list of tasks finished before it gets dark.
