Everest Masala. Our workplace is located at A29 in Gali No. 9, Hari Nagar. This is in the Kanker Knees area of Meerut Cantt. It is a very tight street, and you can’t really drive a big car down here without a lot of trouble. The air in our shop is thick with the smell of ground chillies and coriander. It makes you sneeze if you aren’t used to it. We use heavy grinders that shake the floor when they are running. The building is old and the stairs are quite narrow. We spend most of our time weighing out different powders and putting them into bags. My hands are usually stained with the colors of the spices. There isn't much light in the back, so we use a few bright bulbs. The neighbors are all doing similar small-scale work, so there is always the sound of hammers or engines. We don't have a showroom. It is just a place where the work happens. We keep the ledger in a drawer and use a small scale that we've had for years. Meerut Cantt is a busy district and there is always something going on outside. We have tea twice a day and just keep at the grinding. It's dusty and noisy, but it is what we know. We don't put up posters or anything. People find us through word of mouth in Hari Nagar.
