Chaya Organic Farming Private Limited

Down in Purba Medinipore, in the village of Deuli, we started this small company. Sunil Jana is the one who helps coordinate things for us. Ramnagar is the main town nearby. We called ourselves Chaya Organic Farming Private Limited because we wanted to focus on growing things without all those heavy chemicals. It’s not always easy because the salt in the air from the coast can be tough on some plants. We are a private company, but it’s really just a few of us local folks working together. We don't have a lot of money or big investors. We just use our own savings and our own hands. We spend most of our days out in the dirt, checking on the vegetables. Organic farming takes a lot of patience. You can’t just spray a problem away. You have to figure out why it is happening and fix the soil. It’s a slower way of doing things, but we like it better. We aren't trying to sell anyone a dream. We just sell what we grow. Our office is a simple room with a few chairs and a desk. We don't have any big marketing materials. We just talk to people at the market or in the village. It’s been a lot of trial and error, but we’re slowly figuring it out. We just want to keep our land healthy and make a bit of a living.
