Chaudhary Modern Ricemill

Our mill is located in Mohanapur, right near the Samer Veera Chouraha. If you’ve ever been through that intersection, you’ve probably seen the trucks lined up. At Chaudhary Modern Ricemill, the noise is the first thing you notice when you walk in. The machines have this deep hum that you can feel in your feet. There is a constant fine mist of rice husk in the air, no matter how much we sweep. We spend most of our hours watching the grain move through the chutes and making sure nothing gets jammed up. It’s a lot of monitoring and listening for any sound that doesn't belong. The building itself is old and has a lot of character, which is a nice way of saying the roof leaks a bit when the monsoon is heavy. We keep the bags of finished rice stacked high in the warehouse area. It’s a physical job, throwing those sacks onto the back of the lorries at the chouraha. Sometimes the power goes out and everything goes silent, which is always a bit of a shock. We sit around and wait for it to come back on, usually talking about the crop prices or the weather. It’s not a job for someone who likes to stay clean. By the end of the shift, we’re all covered in grey dust. But it’s the life we’ve got here in Mohanapur, and we just keep the machines running daily.
