J. K. Masala is based right in the heart of Old Gunj Bazar in Khadia. Our spot is at number 103. If you’ve ever been to Khadia, you know how narrow the streets are and how many people are always around. It’s a traditional market area. We’ve been here for quite some time, surrounded by other spice shops and traders. Our space is filled with bags and containers. It’s a bit messy sometimes, but we know where everything is. The air usually smells like cumin or chili, depending on what’s being moved that day. We don’t have a fancy storefront. It’s just a regular place of business. We talk to our customers face-to-face. There’s no marketing department here, just us. We open the doors early in the morning when the market starts to wake up. It’s a lot of lifting and counting. Sometimes the noise from the bazaar makes it hard to hear on the phone, but we manage. We’ve grown up in this area, so we know the shortcuts and the other shopkeepers. It’s a tight-knit community. We don’t use big words to describe what we do. We just provide masala to whoever needs it. It’s a simple life and a simple business. We like it that way. The floor is concrete and the walls are a bit stained, but it's home to us. We keep a ledger for the regular accounts and a jar for the spare change.
