Murugan General Store

Murugan General Store is our family shop in Sholavandan. We are on Market Road, which is the heart of the town here in Madurai district. Being on Market Road means we are always in the middle of the action. Farmers come by, and people from the nearby villages stop in when they come to town. We sell a bit of everything, which is why it's a general store. You can find things for the kitchen, some stationery for the school kids, and basic items for the house. The building is old but sturdy. We have a ceiling fan that makes a lot of noise but keeps us cool in the Madurai heat. I usually have a radio playing in the background. My brother and I take turns running the place. We don't have a fancy website or anything like that. We just write the prices on the items or remember them. People in Sholavandan are friendly and they like to talk while they shop. We hear all the local news here. The shop is full of boxes and bags. Sometimes it's hard to find things quickly but we know where everything is hidden. We've been part of this market for years. It’s not a corporate business, just us working every day. We close for a couple of hours in the afternoon when it’s too hot, then open again until the sun goes down. That is just the way we have always done things here on Market Road.
