Mayan Stores

Mayan Stores is located right by the bus stand in Checkanurani. Since we are so close to where the buses stop, we get a lot of travelers passing through every hour. They usually want a quick bottle of water or some biscuits for their journey to the next town. But we also serve the local people living in this part of Madurai. We carry the usual stuff like rice, pulses, and soaps. The shop is quite open at the front, so it gets a lot of dust from the buses pulling in and out. I spend a lot of my time sweeping the floor to keep it clean. It is a family-run thing. My wife sometimes sits here when I have to go to the city to get more stock for the week. We have a small television in the corner to pass the time when it's quiet between bus arrivals. The bus drivers and conductors are our regulars; they come for their tea breaks or to buy small things they need. We don't have a fancy cooling system, just the natural breeze and an old ceiling fan. Sometimes the change is hard to find, so we keep a lot of coins ready in a plastic jar. It is a simple life for us. We open early because the first buses start their routes early. We close once the last major bus leaves for the night. It is just a small shop trying to be useful to the people who are traveling or living nearby.
