Running Kavi Shri Grocery Store at 10A, Bypass Road keeps us on our feet from early morning until late at night. Samayanallur is a place where people are always on the move, especially with the bypass road right there. We get all kinds of folks stopping in. Some are locals we see every single day, and others are just passing through and need a cold drink or a bag of snacks. The shelves are packed with everything we can fit—lentils, soaps, spices, and biscuits. Sometimes the delivery guy leaves the crates right in the middle of the aisle, and I have to scramble to move them before someone trips. It’s a small shop, so it gets cramped when more than four people are inside at once. The ceiling fan wobbles a bit, but it’s been that way for years. I spend a lot of my time counting change and restocking the jars of sweets near the counter. We don’t have any fancy scanners; I just know the prices by heart for the most part. It’s a simple life. You hear all the local gossip and see the kids growing up. When the sun starts to go down, the lights from the traffic on the bypass reflect in our front window. It’s just a regular grocery store, nothing more and nothing less, serving the neighborhood as best we can. We try to keep enough milk in the fridge for the morning rush.
