Kanan General Stores

Down on North Veli Street in Simmakkal, you will find Kanan General Stores. Madurai is a hot city, so the shop is usually a bit cooler inside than out on the street. We’ve been operating out of this spot for years. The street outside is always noisy with buses and bikes, but inside it’s just the sound of the fridge humming and people asking for the price of things. We sell items like soap, cooking oil, and snacks that the local kids like to buy after school. It’s a very local kind of place. We don't have a big staff, just a couple of us who know where every single item is hidden on the high shelves. Sometimes it takes a minute to find what someone wants because we pack a lot into a very small space. The Simmakkal area is quite historic, and we feel like a small part of that daily history. We keep the doors open from morning until the stars are out at night. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to use candles, which makes the shop look quite different for a while. Customers here are mostly regulars who live in the nearby lanes. We don't use any fancy computer systems for billing, just the old-fashioned way with a pen and a notebook. It works for us. It’s a simple, honest way to make a living in the heart of Madurai. We just keep our heads down and do the work, day in and day out, because that is what we have always done.
