About Bavananthi Rice – Food & Beverages in Madurai
Alagar Nagar is a nice spot, and our place at number 77 is where we handle all the rice. It smells like grain and dry husks most of the time, which is a smell I’ve grown to like. We have big stacks of bags everywhere. You have to be careful how you pile them or they might lean over. Bavananthi Rice has been our main thing for a while now. We don't have a fancy office or anything like that. There's just a desk in the corner where we handle the bills and talk to the farmers or the transporters. Most days are spent checking the quality of the grains and making sure the bags are sealed up tight. It’s dusty work, so we wear old clothes that we don’t mind getting dirty. The sun hits the front of the shop in the afternoon, so it gets pretty warm inside. We usually have a bit of a rest then and drink some cold water. People come by with their own containers sometimes, or they just take a whole bag if they have a big family to feed. We don't do any big promotions. Word of mouth is usually enough in Alagar Nagar. If the rice is good, people come back. If it's not, they don't. It’s as simple as that. We just focus on getting the bags in and out without too much fuss. It’s honest work and it keeps us out of trouble. We’ve been at this for a long time.
