Up here in Mualthuamnorth, Lunglei, the hills are quite steep and the work is never really finished. Baunnel Organic Farmer Producer Company Limited is what we call our little group, but mostly we are just a bunch of guys and gals who know how to plant a seed and watch it grow. We decided to register as a company because it made things a little easier for shipping and buying supplies, but deep down, nothing has really changed about how we farm. We still use our hands for most things. We don't like those chemicals because we eat what we grow too, and we want it to be clean. Life in Lunglei involves a lot of walking and a lot of carrying heavy bags up and down the slopes. It keeps you fit, I guess, but it wears out your knees after twenty years of doing it. We meet up often to talk about the weather or the bugs that are currently causing everyone trouble. It is not a formal thing; we just sit on the porch and hash it out. Sometimes we make mistakes, like planting something way too late in the season, but we learn as we go. We aren't experts with fancy degrees, just people who have been doing this since we were big enough to hold a hoe. We focus on getting the produce ready for market and making sure everyone gets a fair share of the earnings. It is a quiet life.
