Up here on Adiana Road in Machhiwara, things revolve around the seasons. When the rice starts coming in, the whole place gets really hectic. Pilot Rice has been part of this landscape for a bit. It’s not a quiet job. The noise from the machines is pretty much constant during the day. We are located right along the road, so we see all the tractors and trucks passing by heading into town. Sometimes the dust from the husks gets in your throat, but you get used to it after a few years. We spend a lot of time checking the grains and making sure the bags are filled right. There is no big corporate office or anything like that here. Just the mill and the storage area where we keep the sacks piled up high. Some days we are short-handed and everyone has to jump in to help with the heavy lifting. It’s a local operation, and most of the guys working here live right in Machhiwara or just a short bike ride away. We don’t spend much time on the computer or doing paperwork if we can help it. We’d rather be out on the floor seeing how the crop looks this year. Adiana Road can get muddy when it rains, which makes moving the rice a bit of a pain, but we manage. We just keep our heads down and get the work done, season after season, without making too much of a fuss about it.
