If you are driving down the Mirzapur Road highway in Bhuj, you can’t really miss the turn-off near the Maruti motor showroom. We are tucked right behind the KD Maruti building, which is a lucky landmark for us since people use it to find our gate. Being out here near the highway means it gets really dusty, especially when the wind picks up in the afternoon. We have stacks of tyres everywhere, from the small ones for cars to the big heavy ones for trucks that travel across Gujarat. The sun hits the yard pretty hard, so we spend a lot of time moving things into the shade when we can. It’s not a quiet place because there is always a compressor running or someone is using a lug wrench. Most of the guys who work here have been around for years and they know the smell of new rubber like it’s their own home. We get a lot of long-distance drivers stopping by because they’ve had a blowout or their tread is getting dangerously thin. We don’t have a fancy waiting room with air conditioning; people usually just sit on a bench or stand around talking while we get the work finished. It is a straightforward business where we look at the wheels, figure out what’s wrong, and fix it so they can get back on the road safely. The highway is always humming in the background, reminding us that there’s always another vehicle coming.
