Zaffron Resort Pahalgam Kmr. is up here in Ganeshbal on the Circuit Road. The air is always a bit cooler here than it is down in the valleys. We spend a lot of our time making sure the heaters are working and that there is enough wood and fuel for when the temperature drops at night. The view is mostly of the trees and the mountainside, which doesn't really change much from day to day. We have to keep an eye on the road, especially when it snows, to make sure people can actually get to us. It’s a lot of shoveling and sweeping during the winter months. Inside, we keep things simple and clean. The kitchen stays busy because people get hungry quickly in the cold air. We don't have any of those high-tech systems you see in big city hotels. We do things mostly by hand here. The staff are local people from the nearby villages who know the area well. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to get the generator started up. It’s just the way things are in the mountains. We try to keep the rooms warm and the blankets thick. It’s a quiet life for the most part, except when the peak season hits and the road gets full of cars. We just focus on keeping the place running and making sure the guests have a hot meal before they head out for the day.
