Srinivasa Raw & Boiled Rice Mill

This mill is out on Gannavaram Road in Kankipadu. The address is 3-652. It’s a bit of a drive from the main town center but the farmers find us easily enough. We do both raw and boiled rice here. The machines are old but they still work hard. There’s always a fine layer of white dust over everything. I’ve stopped trying to wipe it off the chairs because it just comes back. The smell of the grain being processed is very strong. It’s something you get used to after a week or two. We have a lot of space for the sacks. They are piled high up to the roof. Sometimes the birds get in and we have to shoo them out. It’s a lot of manual labor. My back usually aches by five o'clock. We don't have fancy signs or a big marketing budget. The word usually travels by mouth from one farmer to another. Kankipadu is a good place for this kind of work. The weather can be a bit damp which isn't great for the rice, so we have to be careful with the storage. I spend a lot of time talking to the truck drivers who bring the paddy in. They have stories from all over the state. We just keep our heads down and get the hulling done. It's a loud, dusty, honest way to make a living and we've been doing it a long time. My son helps with the machinery when he isn't at school. He's learning the trade slow and steady.
