Out here in Chakkupallam, life moves at its own pace. We are based at number 41 in the Chakkupallam Panchayat. Being a cardamom agent means our lives are tied to the hills and the crops. You can always smell that sharp, sweet scent of the spice in our storage room. It’s a smell that never really leaves your clothes. We spend our days meeting with the growers and checking the quality of the pods. Some days are long, especially during the harvest when everyone is trying to get their goods to market. Our office is simple—just a desk, some scales, and a lot of sacks. We don't have any big marketing plans. We just rely on the people we’ve known for years. Trust is a big thing in this trade. If you say a price, you stick to it. The weather up here can be unpredictable, with the mist coming down off the mountains, but it’s beautiful. We aren't a big corporation with hundreds of employees. It’s just a few of us who know the spice business inside out. We take the cardamom, sort it, and make sure it gets to where it needs to go. It’s what our family has done for a long time, and it’s what we keep doing every day without much fuss.
