Saree

We've been here in Rampura Bazar for quite a while now. Most days start the same way, unlocking the heavy shutters and sweeping out the dust that manages to get under the door overnight. This shop, Saree, is basically where I spend most of my waking hours. It isn't a huge place, just a simple spot filled with shelves of fabric. Sometimes the market gets so crowded you can barely walk outside, but inside we just keep on with what needs doing. We spend a lot of time unrolling pieces of cloth for people to look at and then folding them back up properly. It’s a lot of work on the arms, honestly. My nephew helps out when he isn't busy with school, mostly moving the heavier bundles from the back. We get all kinds of people coming through here. Some know exactly what they want and others just want to sit on the stool and talk for twenty minutes before looking at anything. It gets hot in the afternoons, especially when the power goes out and the old ceiling fan stops. We just drink some water and wait it out. There’s no fancy air conditioning here or anything like that. Just the sarees and us. We try to keep the stock updated based on what people in the neighborhood are asking for. It’s a plain business, really. Just a shop in the middle of a busy bazar trying to get through the day.
