Our spot is at Quarter Number IV/18 in Kirandul, which is right in the heart of the South Bastar region. It is a bit of a climb to get up here, but the air feels a little different than the lower plains. The house is one of those old-style company quarters with thick walls that stay cool even when the sun is beating down on the hills. Kirandul is a busy place if you look at the trains and the mines, but our little corner is usually peaceful. We spend a lot of time organizing ledgers and checking on the mail that comes through the local post office. There is no receptionist or fancy coffee machine here. We just drink whatever the local stall has or make a pot ourselves in the small kitchen. The floors are that old grey stone that never quite looks clean no matter how much you mop it. We have a few plastic chairs for visitors and a heavy desk that takes up most of the front room. People stop by to talk about the project work or just to complain about the monkeys that sometimes jump on the roof. It is a very basic way of doing things, but it works for us out here. We just try to keep the paperwork moving and stay on top of the local schedules. Life here is tied to the rhythm of the mine shifts, so we just follow that pace and keep the files ready.
