Living and working near V I P Road in Kolkata means there is always noise outside, but inside Tarun Ghosh & Shilpasree Musical Unit, it is a different kind of sound. We are over at 66, Italgachia Road and the place is usually packed with instruments and equipment. It can get a bit cramped when everyone is here at once. Sometimes the humidity in Kolkata makes the wood act funny so we have to watch out for that. We spend our days mostly organizing tunes and making sure the musical stuff is ready for whatever is coming up next. It is not a shiny showroom or anything like that. It feels more like a workshop where people who actually care about music hang out. We have some old chairs for visitors and the walls have a few posters that have been there for years. Being near the main road helps people find us, even if the traffic is a mess sometimes. We usually start the day with a quick check of what needs to be fixed or moved. It is a local spot and we like it that way. Most people who come by know us by name and we usually have time for a quick chat before getting back to the instruments. It is just a regular life here with a lot of music around. Often, we stay late to finish up a project or just because the conversation is good. We drink a lot of tea while we work and listen to the rain when the monsoon starts hitting the roof.
