Our office is in a residential part of Kolkata called Purba Barisa. We are located at 22 Prasanto Roy Road, and we share the space with Kankan Samaddar. Ram Moy Chatterje is the person who runs things here for Roofers India. It’s a very small, local operation. We don’t have a fancy showroom or a big staff. It’s mostly just us working out of a couple of rooms in the house. We have some samples of roofing tiles and sheets leaning against the walls, and there are always measuring tapes and notebooks lying around. Kolkata is a city that gets a lot of rain, so we stay pretty busy helping people fix their roofs or put new ones on. We don’t do any big advertising. Most of our work comes from people in the neighborhood who know us or heard about us from a friend. The atmosphere is very informal. We might be sitting in lungis or casual shirts while we go over the accounts. We drink a lot of tea and chat with the neighbors who pass by. It’s a simple, honest business. We don't have a mission statement or any corporate goals pinned to the wall. We just want to do a good job so that people’s houses stay dry during the monsoon. If you come by, you might have to wait a bit if we are out on a site visit, but we are always around eventually. It’s just a normal way to run a small company.
