Working at 17 Esplanade Mansion is something else. The building itself is a piece of history, right there on Government Place East. It has those high ceilings and thick walls that keep it cool even when the sun is beating down on the city. We’ve been here for a long time, dealing with roofing sheets and industrial materials. It’s a bit of a contrast, being in such a grand old building while talking about corrugated sheets and factory roofs. We spend our days coordinating with the plants and making sure the supply chain is moving. The view outside is of the old heritage structures and the busy streets of the central district. People often walk in just because they are curious about the building, but we’re usually too busy with the ledgers and the phones to give them a tour. We don’t have a flashy showroom here. It’s more of a hub where the planning happens. We deal with a lot of people from the northeast, since that’s where a lot of our material goes. It’s a lot of logistical work, figuring out how to get heavy roofing across long distances. We use old-fashioned wooden desks and have cabinets full of files that go back years. It’s a steady kind of business. We don’t change things just for the sake of it. We like the way things are done here and the people we work with every day.
